Another successful Hash Camp!
Run Reports by Forest

According to messages I've received, this was another successful hash camp. One hasher was very disgruntled though. Arrived home on Sunday to find Hash Ted extremely angry - waving his paws at me - he'd been forgotten!!!! How to make amends- a glass of beer and a left over cake and the tales of wet and mist soon abated his anger. Phew!!!
Thursday
The hares (Forest, Hide 'n Seek, Little Bo Peep and The Godmother) arrived on Thursday to start laying the runs in glorious sunshine. They were rewarded with a much needed cup of tea (and later, Sangria) after laying Saturday's run by the Paceys who looked well settled in. Curry Thursday at Spoons in Tavi set us up for laying the other 2 runs on Friday again in the sun (with 3 of us braving the cold river for a dip).
Run 2547 - Friday
By Friday evening, a cool breeze had built up and we were all shivering in the carpark awaiting 6.30pm. Once on the go though, everyone warmed up and layers were stripped off. The shorts peeled off after crossing a stream and headed towards Foggintor Quarry while the longs had some uphill to take in - Kings Tor with views down to Plymouth and Swell Tor Quarry - before heading to the top of Foggintor Quarry, around it to another L/S split, where a whole pile of guns were ready for a night exercise by the army.

The longs went through the quarry skirting the water, avoiding the froglets that were all over the path, past partygoers setting up camp and army tents opposite them (wonder who disturbed who the most that evening!) then back past the L/S split to catch up with shorts arriving back sort of altogether at the car park.

Back to camp for deliciously hot pasties and the opening of the beer barrels. Down downs to the hares and to Wigan Whippet- 1500 runs and to All Shook Up - 50 runs.

Most retired surprisingly early and not too worse for wear but the sound of laughter from one particular hasher - Spin the Wheel - could be heard ringing out across the campsite. (Apparently she was shepherded to Shake 'em Up and All Shook Up's sound proof campervan to continue the festivities and was rather quiet the next day!!!). Was she after the Hare of the Dog award again!!!
Run 2548 - Saturday
Saturday - so we knew the forecast was awful but had kept our fingers crossed it would change. The mist kept lifting, then descending as we drove to the Fox and Hounds to order lunch before making our way to the start of the hash at the top of the track. En route to the pub, Forest and Hide n Seek decided that the long route up to Widgery Cross was potentially dangerous in the mist and would afford no views anyway, so a change was needed.

The two quickly headed up the track with a bag of sawdust, cut the short route shorter, so the longs could do the original short!!! Panic set in when they tried to link the new short to the old short - could the trail be found?!? False after false, but where was the trail? With 2 mins until 11am, Hide 'n Seek and Forest arrived back at the gate ready to brief the troops - phew! One hasher was not happy and wanted to do the original long - Hornby of course - but was told in no uncertain terms by Hide 'n Seek that he was absolutely not to!!! Being the good school boy- he obeyed the hare thank goodness.

With Forest and Little Bo Peep haring the short route - that they had laid - and The God Mother and Hide 'n Seek haring the long route - that they hadn't laid - the run could have proved interesting as by this time the mist was low and the two groups could not see each other! Kiss Me and Bronyon seemed to find the route without any problems (good laying, I say).
Forest was a bit worried that the longs would get lost but hearing the horn every now and again was a relief and she was told to stop worrying by Potbelly and to stop kicking out the checks for them!!! (think he thought more beer if we lost a few!!) The longs eventually caught up just heading up to Great Nodden and although a little spaced out at the end - everyone arrived back at the pub for lunch. Relief!.
Afternoon tea was brilliantly served by Er Indoors at 4pm, the table decorated with flowers picked at the campsite and cakes galore were consumed. Quiz sheets - How well do you know Cornwall? - were given out with strict instructions that no googling was allowed and they were to be returned at 7pm.
Hashers returned to the marquee at 7pm for a whole array of down downs:
The hares
Hide n Seek for 750 runs
Pot Belly for 1550 runs
Ketchup Kisses for Hasher of the Day
Hornby - for trying to persuade the hare to keep to the original long route
Pete Carne, The Invisible Man and Winging Pom - something to do with one person ordering chips at the pub and another eating them?!? which was denied
B & M for thinking he had lost the keys to the caravan and emptied the whole car out searching for them only to find Her Nicked had them in her pocket.

Then followed a fantastic meal cooked by Er Indoors of Lasagne, Salad, Coleslaw and French bread followed by a surprise pudding of a variety of ice creams.
But who was going to consume the most drink tonight - Spin the Wheel was still quietly getting over her hangover. Then a voice kept appearing- loud enough to be an RA I do believe - Little Bo Peep - what were you drinking? Carried to bed I hear and checked on in the morning!!! Who will get the Hare of the Dog Award?
Run 2549 - Sunday
Blue sky - chairs out - then rain - chairs back in - then sun - chairs out and so it continued but by 10.40 - just after the hash started from the campsite, the weather seemed to clear (for a bit). The hares had problem getting permission to deviate from the footpath, so checks were few and far between but the shorts had a head start as the longs headed off around the campsite and then around the dog walking field before joining the shorts on the West Devon Way.

A competition half way around - stalled the troops for a short while- pick 6 different leaves plus any other natural materials - to make a picture of something to do with Hash Camp. There was a check, an arrow, L2H3, a mug of beer and other entries - judged by The Godmother and
Hide n Seek - the winners would be announced later.
The route continued to and through Mary Tavy, through a couple of fields and back to the campsite via the back entrance.

A delicious Brunch (bacon and sausage baps) cooked in several vans and served by Er Indoors and Mama Mia with left over cakes to follow was waiting for us on our return and very much appreciated.
Down downs to the hares and to The Invisible Man for 1100 runs.
Happy Birthday was sung to Liam (7 yrs), a day late but he had fallen off his bike the day before. He downed the coke like a pro.
Other misdemeanours I think were given? (Can't remember) and then the On Sec gave Thank you Down Downs to B&M and Wiggan Whippet for sorting the beer (picking it up on Thursday, setting it up at camp, driving home and coming back for the camp on Friday and returning the empty barrels) Er Indoors for delicious cooking over the weekend and her helpers - Mama Mia and Capt'n Oats. Sun Dodger and WW for all the Tesco trips they did.

Quiz results were announced with a tie break needed for the joint first place between the Kendals and Anthony and Beryl. The tie break question - In what year did the last widely recognised native speaker of the Cornish Language die? (this person spoke Cornish as her first language). The answer was 1777 - The Kendals were only 2 years out saying 1775 and won the box of Thorntons Chocolates which they duly shared out.

The leaf competition was won by Maggie and Katie- a clear depiction of L2H3 - a big bar of chocolate which Liam quickly claimed.
Hashers started to drift away after this and started to pack but then Rotton Cotton came up to the On Sec and said that Er Indoors had said the hash shirt he was wearing was too big for him and so he wanted to give it to Spin the Wheel so she could wear it as a dress. This was presented to her (photo needed please)
The end of another weekend for some, and the gazebo was taken down and packed into the On Sec & Rangi's van - still a bit wet. About 20 were staying Sunday night to finish the beer and enjoy a pub meal at Peter Tavy.

Thanks to everyone for making it a great weekend despite the weather and to the park wardens ( I will send them a card) for being such great hosts with nothing ever being too much trouble. If we go again they said they would put lights in the gazebo! I said best not as the hashers would stay up and drink even more!!!

On On!
