Hash Camp run reports 2600a/b/c by Mystic Meg
at Castle Brake, Woodbury, Exeter
July 3-5th 2026

Thursday 2nd July – The On-Sec, Mis-Management, Mystic Meg and Hornby arrived at Castle Brake to lay the 3 weekend hashes. Scorcher of a day so there was big relief when after about 4 hours everyone returned to the camp with job done!

Friday 3rd July – Hares Falsie and B&M
After most hashers had sorted themselves out into their accommodation in and around Castle Brake Holiday Park, we all met up at 6.30pm at Wheathill Car Park, East Budleigh Common.
The run took us through a variety of pebbled heathland, woodland and bridle ways. We passed a very picturesque fishing lake and had some lovely views across the Devon countryside.
There was a long short split which saw the shorts miss out the big hill up to Shortwood Common and the longs meandered up along the side of Hayes Wood. Unfortunately, hashers are not allowed access to Hayes Wood (nothing to do with L2H3) which meant we could not run past Hayes Barton, which was home to Sir Walter Raleigh. Back at the car park we found we were missing 5 hashers. Search party was sent out but they turned up – they weren’t lost just hot and tired.

Back at the camp we were treated to pasties and the usual selection of beer and wine.

Down downs given to the hares, Falsie and B&M, Invisible Man for asking for directions whilst standing next to a large arrow, and Shake Em Up for 300 runs.

Saturday 4th July – Hares Hornby, Godmother and Mystic Meg
The hashers gathered at Stantyway Farm. One of the hares got lost on the way and nearly didn’t make the start!
Longs had a 2 minute head start to avoid a blockage along a narrow footpath and to ensure that longs and shorts arrived at the beer stop at the same time.
The run took everyone through the village of Otterton to a long short split at the beginning of Anchoring Hill. They joined again at the kissing gate on the River Otter. There was another long short split taking both longs and shorts through fields of stubble with the longs emerging on the lane to High Peak above Sea View Farm.
Fortunately, today, the longs were not shot at. The hares were, whilst scouting it out the previous Saturday!

Shorts and longs joined in a gateway above Ladram Bay for a very welcome beer stop. A short run across more stubble fields and footpaths took everyone back to Stantyway Farm. A little honesty shop sold ice creams to those fortunate enough to get there quickly before they ran out.

Back at the camp everyone met at ‘Er Indoors’ caravan for Prosecco and cakes. Down downs given to the hares, Hornby, Godmother and Mystic Meg. Gasbag for 750 runs; Wigan Whippet for 1550 runs; Carnage for trying to break into the ladies’ toilets; The Bard for being the first to leave the beer stop and running all the falses; Chatterbox for losing his first tooth; Biscuits for helping out with the shorts; Mr Blobby for being an idiot and following Hornby’s instructions and Zak from the Pacey clan for getting into the spirit of hashing.

7pm we all met at the gazebo for an amazing spread of tagines, couscous and dips made by ‘Er Indoors. More wine and beer of course was consumed. A chilly wind meant many hashers left early to the comfort of their accommodation, leaving only the hard core to carry on the drinking!

Sunday 5th July – Hares Kiss Me and Shake ‘Em Up
Run from the camp at 10.30.

Three long short splits. The run took us across hay fields on to Woodbury Common. Again, the weather was stunning and we were treated to amazing views across to the Exe estuary. We were accompanied by some unwelcome grey flies which were more thirsty than the hashers.
We returned to the camp along footpaths below Woodbury Castle.

Before the down downs Sniffer delivered the sad news that Love-a-Bull had passed away during the night.
An inspiration to us all. She will be sadly missed.
After a short moment of reflection, a glass was raised in her honour.

Back at the Gazebo we were treated to bacon and sausage baps (‘Er Indoors was at it since 7am).

Down downs given to the hares Kiss Me and Shake ‘Em Up; Mandrake for his 8th birthday; Zak for 25 runs and a naming of ‘Monster’ (it’s all he ever drinks!); Falsie for losing his way to the hash yesterday (can’t use the technology); Spin the Wheel for falling (before she had a drink); HT2 for running the hash backwards and a final down down for ‘Er Indoors for all her hard work over the last few weeks keeping everyone fed. Finally, we were all treated to ice creams which were very welcome on another hot day.
